Japan Foundation Library Theme for October:

Translation; “Translating Folktales”

As every country has its own folktales, Japanese folktales reflect Japan’s unique spirit and sense of morality. Some folktales’ authors are unknown yet nearly all of them are set in a well-defined time and place, instead of “once upon a time”.  Translating folktales in general and Japanese ones in particular is not that simple as one of the folktales’ characteristics is that they have a cultural background. It is sometimes difficult to convey those backgrounds into other languages with different cultures.

This month we will introduce a collection of translated Japanese folktales in Arabic, some of which were translated and published through the “Japan Foundation Support Program for Translation and Publication on Japan”. We will also display some other books we hope will be translated into Arabic to enrich Egyptian people’s awareness of Japanese culture. Those books are recommended by Japan Foundation.

We will be displaying an example for the famous Japanese folktales called “The Bamboo-cutter and the Moon Princess”.

About the “Support Program for Translation and Publication on Japan”:

This program is designed to provide financial assistance for foreign publishers to translate and/or publish Japan-related books. The grant shall cover part of the translation cost and/or publishing cost. By enabling the reduction of the sell price, and thus making books more accessible to the general public, especially books that are difficult to publish commercially, the program aims to promote better understanding of Japanese culture and Japanese studies abroad.
